Cross border rules will vary with rental supplier, example Enterprise and Hertz require that you purchase additional European travel cover. This will then permit you to drive into Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. Keddy car rentals permits free cross border travel between the South and the North, but must be requested  in advance and some car categories are not permitted.

Check the cross border rules before booking and expect to pay an additional cross border charge if travelling into the south and some car categories may be prohibited from crossing borders

Suppliers will have slightly different fuel policies, but in general you will be expected to return the car with the same amount of fuel as when you picked up the vehicle. Take note, the fuel refill charges will work out more expensive than had you replaced the fuel before returning the vehicle. 

What is the minimum age to rent a car in NI?
